I am a strong economic conservative, and this is the biggest reason I support the Capital Regional District's pedestrian and cycling master plan. Many of our communities are facing aging roads that are at the end of their lifespans.

Re: "Enbridge stirs up controversy with depiction of waterway," Aug. 15. Beyond the issue of growing public mistrust of Enbridge as a potential builder of the Northern Gateway pipeline, there is a more important issue.

Customers of ICBC - everyone who owns a car - should be angered by an audit that found mismanagement and unreasonable salaries and spending. But the anger should be directed at the government. Crown corporations don't operate in a vacuum.

If Ottawa forces Northern Gateway on B.C., we still have alternatives

Picture this, if you can. A cartoon stick figure wearing a maple leaf grins as he gives an exuberant boot to a little frog wearing a fleur-de-lis.

Re: "Bird experts aflutter over drop in rufous hummingbird numbers," Aug. 16. I wonder at the logic of equating the reduction in migratory hummingbirds to the issue of climate change.

Re: "Move carefully on sewage plant," Aug. 15. The editorial correctly states that the debate on sewage treatment is over. A political decision has been forced over sound, scientific objections.

Whenever a culture gets big enough, someone will come along and try to create a cool crowd within it.

Re: "It takes money to win medals," Aug. 14. The editorial puts the cart before the horse. It takes people, dollars and time to win medals. Olympic success is the result of a healthy, active people involved in sport and recreation as a lifestyle.

Getting more people moving by bicycle is a worthwhile vision, but caution must be exercised to keep that vision within the limits of practicality and affordability.
