The editorial puts the cart before the horse. It takes people, dollars and time to win medals.

Olympic success is the result of a healthy, active people involved in sport and recreation as a lifestyle. Throwing mega dollars into a few chosen elite sports to win medals ignores the spirit of inclusion and right to play.

I burned out coaching high school athletes after nearly three decades because our funding was continually cut to the point where we were spending as much time fundraising as we were practising or playing.

"Own the podium" is episodic nonsense that ignores the true meaning of sports. Let's fund sports in our schools to lay the groundwork for not just medals, but for the inherent values and benefits sports provide.
