Imagine you're a German asked to pay for the lifestyle of a Greek through ever-more transfers to the European Union, or through bailouts for Greek debt.

Professional assessments will give property owners data they need

Re: "Surgery wait times excoriated," Aug. 14. It is a hard reality to face when we hear stories of cancer-stricken Canadians forced to travel to the United States for life-saving care and surgery.

The existence of good regulation is of no value if it is not enforced. In North America there have been two major oil spills in the last 50 years, although they do not appear to have left any permanent damage.

Re: "Deer taking costly toll on hard-hit farmers' fields," Aug. 21. For how much longer must the debate continue on the deer issue in the Capital Regional District? They need to be culled or, better yet, eliminated from the CRD altogether.

The feeling surging through most British Columbians' blood should seem familiar. It's a lot like road rage, albeit inspired by those who insure cars, not those who drive them.

Re: "Central Saanich has low-income housing," Aug. 16. People with low incomes are rarely able to afford to buy homes.

Conventional wisdom tells us that if you think what you are doing is not working, then doing it for a longer period of time probably will not help.

It's a sad day when Canada needs a leader from another country to nudge its policymakers in the direction of common sense.

Just when we thought society had moved beyond this ugly stuff comes word of what was meant to be a joke in a newsletter published by a branch of the Royal Canadian Legion in Cranbrook.
