Victoria police are seeking the public’s help in locating a suspect in a “money-exchange scam” that targeted a Hillside Avenue business.
They said managers at the business called police to report that a suspect had been captured on video conducting the scam on Nov. 17. The managers said the man carried out the scam while making a purchase.
Police said such scams involve someone handing a staff member a large bill to pay for something costing a small amount of money, and then distracting the staff member so that more change than the person is entitled to is handed over.
Losses from a single incident can be in the hundreds of dollars, police said.
Police have released a surveillance picture of the suspect. He is described as white and in his early 30s with an athletic build and short, brown hair.
He was wearing a black baseball cap, a dark-blue or black hoodie with white writing and dark pants. Police said a man with a similar description is a person of interest in a similar case.
Call Victoria police at 250-995-7654 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) with any information.
