Man struck in head with bottle in suspected hate crime

Victoria police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a potential suspect in a suspected hate crime that left a man with non-life threatening injuries early Wednesday morning.

Victoria police investigators are asking for the public's help identifying a potential suspect in a hate crime involving an assault with a weapon.

Victoria police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a potential suspect in a suspected hate crime that left a man with non-life threatening injuries early Wednesday morning.

Police responded to a report of an assault with a weapon on the 1300-block of Douglas Street just after 1 a.m. June 24.

When they arrived, they found an injured man. He was transported to hospital for treatment.

Witnesses to the incident reported that the victim had been struck over the head with a bottle by a man he did not know.

They also reported that the suspect was yelling derogatory terms regarding the victim’s sexual orientation during the assault.

The suspect fled the scene with a small group.

Officers who went to the scene searched the area, but were unsuccessful in locating the suspect or the group.

An image of the suspect was captured on a nearby security camera: a white man with blond hair, a black baseball hat, a grey hoodie and black pants.
