The Courtenay woman injured when her own vehicle crushed her at a fast-food drive-thru this month is expected to make a full recovery, her husband says.

Last week, Lee-Ann Sami, 33, was in an induced coma and doctors were unsure of her prognosis. She is now awake, said Lawrence Sami of his wife, who is being treated at Victoria General Hospital.

"She is coherent. She is speaking to us, joking around, has a sense of humour, which is totally like her," Lawrence said. "As far as where she's at in her recovery, we're unaware at the moment. But she will make a full recovery. The time period we don't know."

Lee-Ann was pinned between her vehicle and the wall at the McDonald's drive-thru pay window in Courtenay on Nov. 11 after she attempted to pick up change she dropped. Her foot slipped off the brake and the van jolted forward, rear-ending another vehicle.

"She doesn't remember what happened," Lawrence said.

At one point, Lee-Ann had stopped breathing and had no pulse. She had serious head and chest injuries. She is expected to be out of intensive care this week.

Friends, family and former co-workers have rallied to help Lee-Ann by collecting donations and organizing fundraisers.

The Whistle Stop Pub in Courtenay is having a benefit concert and silent auction Friday and Saturday. Another family event is being organized for Dec. 16.
