Saanich is considering bringing back its winter holiday event.

On Monday night, council voted to have staff explore costs and options for reinstating its “Deck the Hall” December holiday event at the Saanich Municipal Hall.

“Right now, we’re lacking a Christmas event and Deck the Hall has been inclusive, free, intergenerational, diverse, and accessible to all community members at no cost,” said Coun. Mena Westhaver.

Coun. Colin Plant said it was understandable the event was cancelled during the pandemic and that staff decided not to continue the event due to cost considerations, but it would be reasonable to reconsider what might now be possible.

Deck the Hall has traditionally featured school concerts, a winter light festival, photos with Santa, face painting, arts and crafts, seasonal entertainment and food at the 770 Vernon Ave. site.

The event was held at no cost to residents.

Both the arts, culture and community well-being committee and accessibility, diversity, equity and inclusion committee will review the staff report with an eye to making a recommendation to council later this year.
