The District of Saanich is proposing a mixed-use development at the Nellie McClung library branch site on Cedar Hill Road that includes the library and rental apartments.

An open house for the project is being held today at the library branch.

The district has hired Island View Land Management to lead the rezoning application, which envisions a 25,000-to-30,000-square-foot library as well as lower-cost housing on the site where the library now sits.

The open house will explore building design and explain how the project is planned to be environmentally efficient and economically viable.

The goal is to build the rental apartments with funding from federal and provincial governments, through Canada Mortgage and Housing, and B.C. Housing, Saanich says.

A timeline on Saanich’s website targets next spring for rezoning and 2025 for construction to begin, although that’s contingent on funding.

The in-person open house runs 5 to 7 p.m. today, with the presentation beginning at 5:30 p.m., in the meeting room of the Nellie McClung branch of the Greater Victoria Public Library system, 3950 Cedar Hill Rd.

For those who can’t attend the in-person session, an online Zoom open house is planned for 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, with the presentation beginning at 5:10 p.m.
