A 59-year-old man from Oak Bay faces multiple charges after he was seen with a handgun tucked into his waistband at the Langford branch of the Greater Victoria Public Library.

West Shore RCMP received a call from someone in the library on Tuesday who said that during a brief conversation with the man, he pointed to his waistband, where there appeared to be a handgun tucked into his pants.

No threats were made, but the complainant was alarmed and called police.

The suspect left the area before police arrived, but West Shore RCMP officers were able to determine the identity of the man.

With assistance from West Shore RCMP’s Serious Crime Unit and Oak Bay police, police executed a search warrant at a residence in Oak Bay on Wednesday and recovered a replica handgun.

The man was arrested for unauthorized possession of firearm, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose.

“Though the handgun turned out to be a replica, it had the look, feel and weight of a real handgun,” said Cpl. Nancy Saggar of the West Shore RCMP.

“Additionally, it was carried and displayed in manner to make it appear real. This is very concerning behaviour and charges are being pursued against the suspect.”

The suspect was released on conditions including not going to the library and not being in possession of a firearm or prohibited weapon. He is expected to have a court appearance in the next few months.

Greater Victoria Public Library spokesperson Kelly Ridgway declined to say whether the man has been banned from the library, but said in a statement that ensuring the safety and security of visitors and staff is a priority.

“As this is an ongoing police investigation, we are unable to provide comment but are co-operating with local authorities as they conduct their investigation.”
