A driver was handed about $900 in tickets after a parked vehicle was damaged in a hit and run Sunday night in Oak Bay.

Police were on patrol about 10:55 p.m. around Beach Drive and Newport Avenue when the owner of the parked vehicle hailed them about the damage.

They searched the area and located a pickup that was missing a wheel a short distance away on a side road.

The pickup’s 34-year-old driver had insurance that had expired two years before, and the truck didn’t have proper licence plates, police said.

Both vehicles had damage estimated at more than $10,000.

The pickup driver was issued a ticket of $598 for having no insurance, $196 for failing to stop after colliding with an unattended vehicle and $109 for using the wrong licence plates — which were seized and returned to ICBC.

The vehicle has been taken off the road until it is in compliance with regulations, and must go through an inspection, police said.
