Turf fields at Topaz Park have reopened after a $6.71-million rebuild.

The rebuilt and expanded facility includes a full-size turf soccer pitch, youth-size multi-purpose field, softball diamond and spectator seating.

The old turf field, Victoria’s only artificial turf pitch, was deemed to have reached the end of its functional life.

“The new turf field is an amenity that will be enjoyed and used by people of all ages from every neighbourhood,” said Mayor Marianne Alto. “This investment in recreation and sport contributes enormously to Victoria’s vibrancy and vitality.”

The expanded turf sports fields are part of a $10-million investment in Topaz Park that includes the skate and bike park that opened last year.

There are also plans for pickleball courts, upgrades to the ball diamond and an improved leash-optional dog area.

Some of the funding for the turf field improvements came from a $2.4-million infrastructure grant from the provincial and federal governments out of the Canada Infrastructure Program.

That program offers grants for projects that help reduce air and water pollution, increase climate-change resilience, build strong communities and ensure “Canadian families have access to modern, reliable services that improve their quality of life.”

“Our community cherishes Topaz Park as a space for all to play, explore, and stay active,” said provincial Transportation Minister Rob Fleming, MLA for Victoria-Swan Lake, who was on hand for the grand opening Friday.
