A suspect in an attempted restaurant break-in in Nanaimo led police on a 40-minute chase before he was found nearby hiding underneath a tarp.

Nanaimo RCMP said the man used a combination of cycling and running to elude officers, but was finally found with the help of a police dog.

The chase began when a witness called 911 about 6:30 a.m. Thursday after seeing a man trying to break through the glass patio doors at Original Joe’s on the Island Highway.

The suspect took off on his bike just as police were arriving.

Jason Paul Klughart, 23, appeared Friday in Nanaimo provincial court. He is charged with attempted break-and-enter, wearing a disguise with intent, resisting arrest and possession of marijuana.
