Nando's opens downtown restaurant

Nando's has opened its downtown Victoria outlet on Government Street at Pandora, taking over a spot that previously housed a sushi restaurant. The first Greater Victoria outlet for the international chain was in Langford.

They serve a nice spicy grilled chicken, marinated in peri-peri chili sauce. There are spice level options, from lemony (no spiciness) to really hot (for me at least). You get a better deal if you order a full chicken.

Peri-peri fries are also on the menu, but they're basically just run-of-the-mill frozen fries that have been spiced up.

Plus, they have a wide range of side orders, including spicy rice, baked potatoes, coleslaw and corn.

You peer up at a big menu board, order at a counter, get a number, find a table. The order is delivered to your table.

Here's a pre-opening Times Colonist story from June.

Nando's has a wonderful, whimsical website -- one of the best restaurant websites I've seen; it uses animated cartoony characters and backgrounds. And most importantly, it has a menu, complete with prices, though you have to do some hunting to find it.

Dave, my partner in eating, is on a multi-week vacation at a secret location. Yes, he wouldn't tell me where he was going. But when he returns, I'm sure he'll have many food tales to tell.
