Sign up for the most unusual fundraising walkathon - a 160-kilometre walking safari across Africa.

The organizers behind 100 Miles for Elephants hope a dozen or so hardy adventurers will sign up for a once-in-a-lifetime, nine-day trek through northern Kenya.

This unique fundraiser is meant to raise awareness and money to continue elephant welfare and conservation initiatives, including anti-poaching patrols in Kenya. The goal is for individual participants to raise $500 to $2,500 in pledges.

The trek, which takes place Jan. 23 to 31, will take an intimate group of adventurers far off the beaten path.

Participants will walk with guides in a camel caravan across the African Savannah.

Along the way, they will meet local tribes, learn songs and even join in a traditional leaping dance. Participants are asked to cover the land portion of the trip, at a cost of $3,450 to $3,750.

The organizers of the safari, veterinarian Dag Goering and his wife, author Maria Coffey, are hosting a presentation next Wednesday for people interested in further information on the trek. The couple operates Hidden Places Travel, a boutique adventure travel company that will host the travellers.

The presentation runs 7 to 9 p.m. in the Collard Room of Swans Brewpub, 506 Pandora Ave. Seating is limited.

To register, call 250-9953003. For more information on the elephant welfare and conservation organization, go to elephantearth.org.
