A Cobble Hill teen has been crowned Miss World in a Chinese beauty competition.

Emily Dorma, 16, a Grade 11 student at Frances Kelsey Secondary School in Mill Bay, won the title in the contest, hosted by Chinese model agency New Silk Road. Emily, the youngest of 46 participants, took the crown last weekend in a competition in the city of Pu'er, in Yunnan province.

Now home, Emily said Wednesday she enjoyed the contest and became good friends with contestants from Brazil, Congo and the Netherlands.

"It was fun; the language barrier was a little hard with all the girls," Emily said.

She said she has been modelling since she was about 13 but ultimately plans on a medical career, specializing in anesthesiology.

The Dorma family dog has also brought recognition to the family. Last February, Reo, the Dormas' Havanese toy dog, won best of breed at the prestigious Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in New York City.
