Update: A byelection in the provincial riding of Nanaimo, to replace MLA Leonard Krog, will be called on or before the start of January, Premier John Horgan said Monday. Krog was elected the new mayor of Nanaimo on Saturday.

The lobby group Amalgamation Yes will live to fight another day.

Oak Bay has a new mayor as former councillor Ken Murdoch defeated long-time veteran councillor and incumbent mayor Nils Jensen.

Bookstore owner Cliff McNeil-Smith has upset incumbent Steve Price to become the next mayor of Sidney. McNeil-Smith, owner and general manager of Tanner’s Books, defeated Price 3,740 votes to 929. “I’m enormously excited,” McNeil-Smith said.

Barb Desjardins will continue to serve as Esquimalt mayor after easily defeating her challenger, John Roe. The final result was 2,919 to 1,128. Desjardins said the first task facing council is deciding how to spend $17 million in amenity funds.

Acclaimed incumbent Mayor David Screech hopes the fact he ran unopposed is a sign of the community's satisfaction. “I’m definitely honoured to be the mayor for the next four years,” said Screech.

There will be a new face in a mayor’s seat in the West Shore. Challenger Rob Martin defeated two-term Mayor Carol Hamilton in Colwood. “This means the world to me.
