Seniors are invited join us for an enriching series of Jewish Lutheran Dialogue. This two-part interfaith exchange will be an opportunity for participants to engage in dialogue and learn from each other as well as from our speakers.

TUESDAY OCTOBER 10 AT 12 PM AT TEMPLE SHOLOM
New Understandings of the Commandments of the Torah: The Case of Paul of Tarsus, the Law, and the Jewish People
Speaker: Dr. Harry O. Maier
In recent years biblical scholars have sought to understand the apostle Paul not as the first Christian but rather a Torah-observant Jew who interpreted the role and function of the Torah for non-Jews in his proclamation of Jesus as the Messiah of Israel.
Professor Harry Maier will consider several questions: How did Paul precisely perceive the function of the Torah and the Law and their relation to faith in Jesus? The talk will prompt reflection on the motivations behind virtuous actions. Do these actions stem from an intention to garner God’s affection, secure heavenly placement, or elicit divine favors? Or, rather, do they epitomize our profound love for both the divine and humanity, serving the purpose of nurturing a more harmonious and just society?

Religious Obligation in the 21st Century: Challenges and Opportunities
Speaker: Rabbi Carey Brown
To be a religious person in the 21st century presents its own unique challenges, particularly considering the personal autonomy that many of us cherish living in an open society in Canada. Rabbi Carey Brown will share about the ways in which Reform Judaism has embraced personal autonomy while upholding a concept of covenantal obligation. She will share a presentation of Jewish understandings of Torah and Halakha (Jewish Law), as well as an overview of the distinctions between the three major streams of modern Judaism.

Transportation and Parking: If you are taking public transportation, Temple Sholom is located on the 17 bus line across the street from the Oak and 54th Street stop. If you plan to drive, be aware that parking in our parkade is extremely limited, and only available on a first come first served basis to those with designated parking permits. There is street parking available on 54th and 57th streets, or you may wish to arrange for a cab to drop you off and pick you up.
BIO’s
Rabbi Carey Brown has been a rabbi at Temple Sholom since 2011. She was ordained from the New York school of Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion in 2005 and served for six years as Assistant and Associate Rabbi of Temple Isaiah in Lexington, Mass. Rabbi Brown is a native of Minneapolis, Minn. and a graduate of Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. She is married to Gregg Gardner, who serves as the Diamond Chair of Jewish Law and Ethics at UBC. Together they are the proud parents of Yael and Jonah. Rabbi Brown is passionate about Jewish education for all ages and loves teaching Torah and Talmud to the Temple Sholom community through her classes and sermons. She is also tremendously proud of the outreach work that she is fortunate to lead at Temple Sholom, including the award winning East Side Jews program, connecting young Jewish families in East Vancouver and beyond, coordination of the Jewish Information Class (JIC) for those exploring conversion, and responsibility for the Temple Sholom Next Generation group for young adults in their 20s and 30s. In her free time, Rabbi Brown loves exploring the outdoors – especially hiking and snowshoeing – and feels extraordinarily lucky to be living in Vancouver.
Harry O. Maier is Professor of New Testament and Early Christian Studies at Vancouver School of Theology and a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada. For over a decade he participated in the Vancouver Jewish Christian dialogue, serving for two years a co-chair. He dedicates much of his teaching and research to recovering and examining the Jewish roots of the New Testament and early Christianity.
Lorraine Reinhardt is highly respected as a teacher of singing and engages students in her private studio. She sang professionally with the Vancouver Chamber Choir and was a founding member of Elektra Women’s Choir. Lorraine is active in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada, at Spirit of Life Lutheran Church, and as chair of the National Programme Committee for Worship. Martin Luther said, “To gather with God’s people in united adoration of the Father is as necessary to the Christian life as prayer.” May God continue to grant us desire and opportunity to gather in prayer and praise and adoration.
Cantor Shani Cohen has been a part of the Temple Sholom clergy team since July 2021. She was ordained by the HUC-JIR Debbie Friedman School of Sacred Music in New York and has served as the Student Cantor at Hevreh of Southern Berkshire in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, Tisch Cantorial Intern at Central Synagogue in Manhattan, and the Cantorial Intern at Congregation Beth Elohim in Brooklyn. Cantor Cohen grew up in Sunnyvale, California, and earned her Master of Vocal Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Houston. It was in Houston that she was inspired to pursue the cantorate, through which she could continue to share her love of Judaism and Jewish music with others. Cantor Cohen feels so fortunate to be engaged in this sacred work in the gorgeous city of Vancouver, where she lives with her wife, Kylynn.
