The players from the Canadian Tour have spoken and they're big fans of Uplands Golf Club, the home of the Times Colonist Island Savings Open for the past five years, the volunteers and the city of Victoria itself.

The Canadian Tour did a survey with its players to find out what they thought about the courses, cities and tournaments during the 2012 season.

The majority of the players said Uplands was their favourite course, followed by Roseland Golf and Curling Club and Scarboro Golf and Country Club. Uplands was also named the best conditioned course with the best greens.

"This just shows that Brian Youell and his staff have one of the top golf courses in Canada and that is why the players love coming here," said Murray Thomas, Times Colonist Island Savings Open tournament director. "Brian [Youell] always produces a first-class golf course, with fast greens and tough rough. It is nice to see the Uplands crew get some recognition."

Youell, the master superintendent at Uplands, was recently named the Canadian Golf Superintendent of the Year. He will receive the award on Jan. 25 in Toronto.

In the best volunteers category, the Times Colonist Island Savings Open and the ATB Financial Classic, held in Fort McMurray this year, tied for first.

"Our volunteers deserve to be right up there," said Thomas. "The volunteers here are unbelievable. They work very hard to make the event run smoothly every year."

Victoria was named the favourite city visited by the players, followed by Saskatoon.

The 2013 Times Colonist Island Savings Open will be back at Uplands for a sixth year but a date has yet to be determined.

Order of Merit winner Matt Hill from Sarnia, Ont., was selected as the Player of the Year, while Eugene Wong of North Vancouver was a close second. [email protected]
