The Victoria Royals traded a forward and acquired a forward in two separate Western Hockey League transactions Tuesday.
Carter Dereniwsky, a second round pick by the Royals in the 2019 WHL prospects draft, was traded Tuesday to the Lethbridge Hurricanes in exchange for an eighth-round selection in the 2025 WHL prospects draft.
The five-foot-10, 168-pound native of Canora, Sask., was selected 39th overall by the Royals. The 19-year-old recorded 10 goals and 13 assists for 23 points in 76 games for Victoria between 2020 and 2023.
The Royals also announced the acquisition of Escalus Burlock, 17, from the Red Deer Rebels for a seventh-round pick in the 2026 WHL prospects draft.
The six-foot-four and 204 pound winger from Edmonton played eight games for the Rebels last season on call-up from the Edmonton Junior Oilers U-18 team. He had 14 goals and 27 points for the Junior Oilers in 30 games. Burlock had 26 goals and 42 points in 2021-22 for the U-18 CAC Canadians. Burlock was drafted 135th overall in the seventh round of the 2021 WHL prospects draft by the Rebels.
The Royals went 3-1 in the preseason and open the 2023-24 WHL regular season Friday night at the Langley Events Centre against the Vancouver Giants, followed by a game Saturday night at Angel of the Winds Arena in Everett, Washington, against the Silvertips. The home openers for Victoria are Sept. 29-30 at Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre against the Prince George Cougars.
