Victoria golfers take aim at PGA

Anderson, Renfrew gearing up for gruelling qualifying school

Cory Renfrew and Stuart Anderson are searching for the common goal, it just may take alternate routes to get to their ultimate destination.

The two touring golfers will set their sights on PGA Tour qualifying, Renfrew competing in the first stage of the gruelling Q-school this coming week at the Oak Valley Golf Club in Beaumont, California.

Anderson also has a tee time set for Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountains, Georgia, next Wednesday, but could skip the first stage if he comes through with an impressive week at the Winn-Dixie Jacksonville Open at the Dye's Valley Course in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, as he tees it up today in his regular slot on the Web.com Tour.

Anderson, currently 119th on the money list, would need to place in the top 60 overall to elude the first stage and go directly to the second in three weeks time.

"I need to give myself one good week here," said Anderson, an Alberta native who now calls Sooke home.

"Get in that top 60 and into the [Web.com] Tour Championship. I would need the dream week.

"I probably have three different goals this week," added the 34-year-old. "The first is play on the weekend. Second is finish in the top 100 [tour money list] to get a conditional card for next year. It wouldn't matter a whole lot, but I would still be a member.

"The third goal, obviously, is play real well and get into that top 60 on the final money list before the Tour Championship."

Anderson placed in a tie for sixth at the Price Cutter Charity Championship in August in Springfield, Missouri, earning $20,234.38 after rounds of 67, 72, 63 and 68 for an 18-under 270 total.

"I know I can compete here. Unfortunately, I didn't close it out in Springfield. I had a chance to win that right in front of me [finishing three shots back]," said Anderson, who made it through to the final stage of PGA Q-school last fall to earn his Web.com tour playing privileges.

As for Renfrew, the 26-year-old Victoria native is coming off a solid rookie season on the Canadian Tour where he placed third on the money list at $41,436.71, just $1,500 behind Michael Gligic of Burlington, Ont., who along with No. 1 Matt Hill, also of Ontario, earned exemptions into the second stage of PGA Tour Q-school.

"I'm trying to get there," said Renfrew who has been home in Victoria practising for the last couple of weeks after attempting to qualify for the European Tour in Italy, where he missed out on his card by a single stroke. "I'm confident and hopeful.

"I'm playing all right and I've seen the [Oak Valley] course before [during Canadian Tour qualifying]. You have to take advantage of anything that gives you a head start and a little confidence. I've played a couple of rounds there."

Renfrew - who won at the Syncrude Borreal Open in Fort McMurray, Alta., and placed tied for second at the Times Colonist Island Savings Open, isn't sure just what it will take to get to the second stage of Q-school.

"It depends on conditions, if the wind blows or not," he said. "It's going to take consistency through four rounds and eliminating any bad rounds that might get you going the wrong way.

"It's all part of the process of making it to the Tour where I want to be," added Renfrew. "I'm obviously pleased with playing well this year. There were other chances that I let slip by, but overall I'm pretty happy with it."
