The University of Victoria Vikes recorded the upset of the season in Canada West’s women’s soccer by knocking off the U Sports nationally top-ranked Trinity Western Spartans of Langley 2-1 at Centennial Stadium.

The Spartans are 12-2 and the Vikes 7-6-1.

Georgia Bignold redirected a corner kick from Aishy Shinomura and Kiara Kilbey scored the winner for UVic. The Vikes finished fourth in the Pacific Division and will play the fifth-place team from the Prairie Division, the Saskatchewan Huskies, in a play-in playoff game Friday.

The winner of the Vikes-Huskies matchup will advance to meet the Calgary Dinos in a conference quarter-final on Sunday in Calgary.

The UVic men’s soccer squad, however, was only playing for pride in closing out the Canada West season with a 2-0 victory in Kelowna against UBC-Okanagan on Sunday. Rookie star Matteo Ventura scored his 10th goal for the Vikes in the contest. UVic missed the playoffs at 5-8-3.
