UVic teams sweep MacEwan in Canada West basketball

Diego Maffia leads men’s scoring, Tegan MacKinnon leads women’s

The University of Victoria Vikes, ranked No. 2 in the U Sports national men’s basketball top-10 poll, defeated MacEwan University 87-58 on Saturday evening in Edmonton to sweep their two-game Canada West weekend set against the Griffins. UVic won Friday night’s game 95-47 and is 15-3 in conference. MacEwan is winless at 0-20.

Guard Diego Maffia led UVic with 27 points Saturday while Renoldo Robinson and Shadynn Smid added 14 points each and Elias Ralph nine.

The UVic women’s team (8-10) also swept the Griffins (1-19) in their Canada West set by besting MacEwan 69-56 on Saturday as Tegan MacKinnon scored 15 points for the Vikes, Tana Pankratz and Mimi Sigue 12 points each, Abigail Becker 11 and Makena Anderson nine. UVic won Friday’s game 75-33.

The Vikes men’s and women’s teams meet their Thompson Rivers University WolfPack counterparts on Wednesday and Thursday on Ken and Kathy Shields Court at CARSA Gymnasium.
