The Canada West men’s and women’s basketball games between the University of Victoria Vikes and Thompson Rivers University WolfPack, scheduled for Friday and Saturday at CARSA gym, have been postponed due to a tragedy involving the TRU athletic department.

A member of the WolfPack men’s volleyball team was killed and two other TRU players reportedly received critical injuries in a multi-vehicle automobile collision near the TRU campus in Kamloops.

TRU games in all sports have been postponed until further notice.

The University of Victoria Department of Athletics and Recreation issued a statement through director of varsity performance sport, Nick Clarke, expressing: “Profound sorrow and condolences in the wake of the devastating tragedy involving members of the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack family. UVic joins the wider community in mourning the loss and extending heartfelt sympathies to all those affected by this tragic incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire TRU community during this exceptionally challenging time. The decision to postpone the basketball games is a reflection of Canada West’s commitment to prioritizing the well-being and collective healing of all those impacted. It’s unimaginable and heartbreaking beyond belief.”

It was not announced when the postponed TRU-UVic basketball games would be played. The UVic men’s team is ranked No. 2 nationally in U Sports and is 5-1 in conference. The WolfPack are 1-5. The UVic women are 0-6 and TRU women’s team 2-4.
