The Westshore Rebels (5-2) proved they are legitimate contenders by giving the nationally top-ranked Okanagan Sun (6-0) all they could handle in a thrilling B.C. Football Conference contest at Starlight Stadium on Saturday.

The Sun, trailing 21-13 at the half and 24-20 after the third quarter, rallied for a 34-31 victory. Westshore’s biggest lead, before the Sun comeback, was by 15 points.

It was a markedly different game than the first meeting between the clubs, a 65-29 blowout victory by the Sun, on Aug. 13 at the Apple Bowl in Kelowna.

A moment of silence was held, in tribute to Queen Elizabeth, before the game.

Meanwhile, the VI Raiders (1-6) coming off their bye week, and a major theft of more than $50,000 worth of equipment and uniforms when their locker room was broken into last week, lost to the Valley Huskers of Chilliwack (4-2) at the Nanaimo District Secondary School field.
