Royals get OT win over Silvertips to end preseason on high note

The Victoria Royals concluded the Western Hockey League preseason with a 1-4 record following defenceman Nolan Jones’ overtime winner in a 2-1 victory over the Everett Silvertips on Sunday afternoon at the Langley Events Centre.

Forward River Fahey from Campbell River, with his third exhibition-season goal over the last two games, tallied for the Royals in regulation time.

Shane Farkas started in goal for the Royals and stopped all eight shots he faced over 30 minutes and eight seconds of play. Brock Gould went the rest of the way and allowed one goal on 20 shots in 34:45 of play.

In its final tuneup, Victoria dressed seven rookies and 13 veterans. Everett went with 10 rookies and 10 veterans.

The Royals will open the WHL regular season in Everett, Washington, against the Silvertips on Sept. 21. Victoria’s home opener is Sept. 27 against the Prince George Cougars at Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre.
