North Island outmatches South in junior Ryder Cup tournament

While the world’s best golfers were battling in the Ryder Cup at Medinah, the Island’s top young golfers were holding their own version of the event at Glacier Greens in Comox.

While the world’s best golfers were battling in the Ryder Cup at Medinah, the Island’s top young golfers were holding their own version of the event at Glacier Greens in Comox.

And while a miraculous comeback was not required, the South Island versus North Island Ryder Cup Championship was just as close with the North squeaking out an 8-7 win.

The competition, which saw each team comprised of eight boys and four girls, ran over two days beginning with two-person best-ball matches. Sunday saw alternate shot matches, followed by singles matches.

Zone 5, despite Darren Day’s remarkable double-eagle 2 on the 489-yard second hole, trailed after the opening day’s matches. And despite winning five of the nine singles matches Sunday afternoon, they came up just short overall.

Members of the championship North team were, Mark Valliere (Crown Isle), Zach Anderson (Nanaimo), Dallas Jones (Mt. Brenton), Gavin Hollebakken (Mt. Brenton), Terran Berger (Glacier Greens), Matthew Irvine (Crown Isle), Cole Morrison (Pheasant Glen), Josh Legge (Myrtle Point), Emily Adams (Mt. Brenton), Shirin Anjarwalla (Nanaimo), Michelle Waters (Pheasant Glen) and Alex Webber (Crown Isle).

The South team included, Day (Royal Colwood), Matthew Broughton (Royal Colwood), Alex Cartwright (Olympic View), Jack Lilly (Uplands), Tristan Mandur (Arbutus Ridge), Andrew Funk (Glen Meadows), Callum Davison (Cowichan), Keaton Gudz (Olympic View), Naomi Ko (Olympic View), Mirai Hayashi (Uplands), Haley Kruse (Victoria) and Lexi Kondrak (Cedar Hill).

Camosun golfers still tops

Despite a narrow loss this past weekend, the Camosun College Chargers golf team remain in top spot in the Pacwest standings.

Chargers veteran Jarred Callbeck won his second individual title of the season at the 36-hole Vancouver Island University Invitational at Nanaimo Golf Club, but it wasn’t enough as Fraser Valley edged Camosun by one shot in the team event. Callbeck fired rounds of 69 and 74, while teammate Jared Hundza was two strokes back with rounds of 75 and 70.

This weekend the Chargers head to Chilliwack Golf and Country Club for its final Pacwest tournament of the season. Camosun will be looking to defend its Pacwest title and earn a trip to the PING Canadian Colleges Athletic Association National Championship, Oct. 16-19 in Oshawa, Ont.

Midget Royals on a roll

The South Island Royals are home for a pair of B.C. Major Midget Hockey League games this weekend and this time they head into the double-bill against the West Valley Hawks on a high note.

The Royals picked up their first points of the young season last weekend, picking up a win and a tie against the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds. After a 3-1 win on Saturday, the Royals and T-Birds played to a 2-2 tie.

The Royals’ record improved to 1-2-1. This weekend’s games against the Hawks (2-2) go Saturday at 4:30 p.m. and Sunday at 10 a.m. Both games are at Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre.r
