Two University of Victoria Vikes programs, which have produced several Olympians for Canada over the years, are hosting Canadian championships this weekend.
The Canadian university rowing championships take place today and Sunday on Elk Lake.
In field hockey, Canada West champion UVic blanked the Ontario champion University of Guelph Gryphons 3-0 in the first game of the best-of-three U Sports women’s national championship series Friday.
Georgia Booker, Jenna Berard and Erin Dawson scored while Robin Fleming recorded the clean sheet. Judy Cristante was named player of the game for UVic.
The second game is today at 4 p.m. at the UVic turf field. The third game, if needed, will start at 2 p.m. Sunday.
UVic head coach and former Olympian Lynne Beecroft is after her 13th U Sports national title in her 36th season as Vikes bench boss.
In basketball, the UVic Vikes opened the Canada West women’s season with a 97-93 overtime victory against the UNBC Timberwolves in Prince George on Friday night. The score was 85-85 after regulation time. UVic was led by Marissa Dheensaw’s 28 points. The teams meet again tonight.
Meanwhile, the UVic Vikes men’s Canada West basketball season opener against UNBC was in progress at press time.
