Names and Games: Golfers Murdoch, Baziuk in a zone

First, they finished 1-2 at the Zone 5 (South Vancouver Island and Gulf Islands) Women’s Amateur and Senior Championships and then the two claimed the team title at the recent B.C. Senior Championship in Cranbrook. Baziuk was third overall in the individual race, while Murdoch was fourth. Baziuk finished the 54-hole event with a 235 total, while Murdoch came in with a 237 score.

At the two-day Zone 5 event, Murdoch won both the Amateur and Senior title with rounds of 79 at Arbutus Ridge and 77 on her home course at Victoria Golf Club. Baziuk, who plays out of Ardmore, finished with rounds of 81 and 83.

Koira South Island’s top junior golfer

There’s a new name on top of the Zone 5 Junior Girls golf world.

Cindy Koira, who plays out of Victoria Golf Club and Gorge Vale, edged two-time defending champion Akari Hayashi of Uplands in the two-day Zone 5 championship played at Cedar Hill and Victoria Golf Club.

Koira finished with rounds of 69 and 75 to beat Hayashi by four strokes. Koira will now represent the zone at the B.C. Junior Girls Championship July 2-5 at Fairwinds Golf Club in Nanoose Bay.

In the Zone 5 net championship, Rebecca Kim of Victoria/Gorge Vale, recorded net scores of 61 and 69 to edge her younger sister Sarah Kim by two strokes.

Rebecca Kim will also represent Zone 5 at the B.C. Junior Girls Championship.

These Victoria kids can sure play

The next generation of golfers on the Island is in good hands thanks to a pair of Victoria players.

Bentley Hoogerdyk and Sarah Kim recently qualified for the 2019 U.S. Kids Golf World Golf Championships which will be played in Pinehurst, North Carolina from Aug. 1 to 3.

Hoogerdyk won the Boys Six-year-old Division on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour, while Kim took top honours in the Girls Nine-year-old Division.

The Kids World Golf Championships will take place on Pinehurst No. 2 course, which hosted the 2014 U.S. Open Championship.

Reaume impresses on Texas track

Josh Reaume is heating up at the right time as the NASCAR Gander Outdoor Truck Series hits mid-season.

Reaume had his best showing of the year last weekend at the Speedy Cash.com 200 at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth. Reaume, behind the wheel of his family-owned Colonial Countertops Chevrolet Silverado SS, qualified in the 23rd spot and finished 14th in the race, one lap down of eventual champion Greg Biffle. It was Reaume, who resides in the Highlands, second-best finish of the season.
