A West Shore brother-and-sister act proved too much to handle for the rest of the field at last weekend’s 36th Annual Alberni Invitational Wrestling Tournament. Jack Pye and sister Ellie won gold medals in their respective divisions.

A West Shore brother-and-sister act proved too much to handle for the rest of the field at last weekend’s 36th Annual Alberni Invitational Wrestling Tournament.

Jack Pye and sister Ellie won gold medals in their respective divisions. Representing Dunsmuir Middle School, Jack went undefeated in winning the 72-kilogram weight class. Not to be outdone by her older brother, Ellie, who attends Happy Valley Elementary, won the girls’ 47-kilogram class, winning all three of her matches.

Also earning a medal in Alberni was Elijah Palov of Monterey Middle School. Palov went 3-1 in earning a silver medal.

New course for Cedar 12K

Next up in the 2019 Vancouver Island Race Series is the Cedar 12K on Sunday at 11 a.m. and this year runners will find it a lot easier on the body and a little more scenic.

The start/finish line has been moved to Gould Road near Cedar Intermediate Secondary School.

“The new route offers a much flatter course and now follows Quennell Road, with lake views and scenic countryside,” race director Jim Rutherford said in a statement. “And changes to the start/finish line make the course a true out-and-back, eliminating the traditional finish which took runners across a sometimes sloppy school field.”

Runners can register online until Friday at 6 p.m. at islandseries.org or on race day until 10:15 a.m.

The Cedar 12K will be followed by the Hatley Castle 8K on Feb. 24.
