Mount Doug set to defend Subway Bowl title

Rams hoping history repeats against Terry Fox

The road to defend their Subway Bowl provincial triple-A football championship begins this afternoon for the Mount Douglas Rams varsity team.

Coach Mark Townsend's Rams will face Terry Fox at 3 p.m. at Westhills Stadium, and if it's anything like the pre-season clash, fans are in for a treat.

Mount Doug came back from an early 12-0 deficit in that game to win 44-40 on quarterback Ashton MacKinnon's touchdown pass to Ross Faulkner with just 12 seconds to play.

MacKinnon was an amazing 20 for 27 for 246 yards and five touchdowns in that game, and runningback/ receiver Marcus Davis had a staggering 312 all-purpose yards with three TDs.

Needless to say, Townsend would love a repeat performance.

"It boiled down to an old-fashioned shootout," Townsend said. "We're expecting another exciting contest. There is a lot of mutual respect between the two teams.

"Offensively, they are led by very talented quarterback Trevor Casey, who possesses a strong arm and is also a threat to run the football."

Casey just returned from a collarbone injury. Brad Lyons is also a force defensively for Terry Fox, which last week defeated Centennial 21-20 in the first round of playoffs while the Rams - the defending B.C. champs - had a bye.

"We've had a great week and a half of practice in preparation of hosting this quarter-final," Townsend said. "We're about as healthy as we have been throughout the season, and I know the kids are looking forward to this."

The junior Rams will head to Kelowna on Saturday for playoffs.

Last week, Belmont dropped a 21-15 decision to Windsor at Goudy Field in senior play to be eliminated from the post-season.
