Mixed results for Vikes cagers in Calgary

There were mixed results for the University of Victoria Vikes in Canada West basketball action on the road Friday night in Calgary. The Vikes men’s team (5-2) defeated the Mount Royal Cougars 95-75 behind forward Matthew Ellis’s 21-point performance.

The Vikes men’s team (5-2) defeated the Mount Royal Cougars 95-75 behind forward Matthew Ellis’s 21-point performance. Rookie guard Diego Maffia added 17 points. The Cougars fell to 3-4.

The Cougars upset UVic 66-64 in Canada West women’s play earlier Friday in Calgary.

The Vikes women, an honourable mention in the weekly U Sports national top-10 poll, fell to 5-2 in conference play. Mount Royal moved to 3-4 as Abbey Gillette hit two free throws with three seconds remaining in regulation time. A last-gasp UVic shot hit the rim.

Ashlyn Day had 22 points for UVic and Kristy Gallagher 15.

The Vikes and Cougars close out their men’s and women’s sets with games Saturday night in Calgary.
