It was a perfect finish to the season for the Langford Lightning U-17 softball team.
The Lightning won the U-17 Canadian championship Sunday in Montreal.
The Lightning went 8-0 in the national tournament and outscored their opponents 68-9. Langford defeated the Fraser Valley Fusion 8-2 in the all-B.C. gold-medal game. Calgary Adrenaline beat the Saskatoon Raiders 9-2 in the bronze-medal game.
Lightning pitching sensation Ruby Anderson of Saanichton, who made her Canadian senior national team debut this summer, threw three no-hitters and was named tournament MVP. Brynn Fortier and Kaliyah St Amand provided pitching support behind Anderson. The leading batters or fielders on the Lightning squad included Kalea Gillis, Peyton Bryden, Marin Jorgenson, Emma Pepin, Makena Aune, Jenna Lehman and Courtney Haslam.
The team is coached by Chad Bryden, who said of his group: “We are well balanced with pitching, hitting and base running and our biggest asset is that we play as a team. It’s just a great group of kids.”
