The second-round B.C. Hockey League playoff series between the Victoria Grizzlies and Powell River Kings has settled into an uncanny pattern. Two Victoria victories by wide margins have been followed by two Powell River wins in overtime.
Levi Glasman, who has been torrid, banked in a shot off a Grizzlies skate blade for his ninth goal of the post-season at 7:01 of overtime Tuesday night to give the Kings a 3-2 victory to tie the series 2-2.
Ben Berard’s fourth goal of the playoffs for the Island Division second-seed Kings opened scoring at 8:05 of the first period before 1,069 fans at Hap Parker Arena in Powell River.
New York Rangers draft-pick Riley Hughes tied it for Island Division top-seed Victoria 48 seconds later on the power play. Marty Westhaver’s fifth goal of the playoffs put the Grizzlies ahead at 17:30 of the first.
The second period was scoreless before Kings star forward Ryan Brushett, who was second in BCHL regular-season scoring behind projected first-round 2019 NHL draft pick Alex Newhook of the Grizzlies, tied it at 14:52 of the third period.
The goaltending was stellar in both creases. Kurtis Chapman, coming off a 5-0 shutout performance in Game 3 on Monday, made 32 saves for Victoria to be named second star. Veteran Mitch Adamyk made 31 saves for Powell River and was selected game first star.
The fifth game is Friday night at The Q Centre. The sixth game is Saturday in Powell River and the seventh game, if needed, Monday at The Q Centre.
The other Island Division team still alive, the upstart 16th overall seed Cowichan Valley Capitals, who have become the darlings of the BCHL, continued their shock run through the post-season with a 5-3 victory Tuesday night over the defending BCHL-champion Wenatchee Wild before 1,325 fans at Island Savings Centre.
Cowichan Valley took a 3-0 lead midway through the second period and then broke a 3-3 tie in the third period on the winning goal by Paul Selleck at 13:10 followed by an empty-netter by Preston Brodziak.
The Caps took a 2-1 lead in the second-round series ahead of tonight’s Game 4 in Duncan.
