Kevin Martin to offer clinics at Esquimalt Curling Club

As a two-time Winter Olympics medallist for Canada, and four-time Brier champion in 12 appearances for Alberta, Kevin Martin has earned the accolade as one of Canada’s greatest curlers.

As a two-time Winter Olympics medallist for Canada, and four-time Brier champion in 12 appearances for Alberta, Kevin Martin has earned the accolade as one of Canada’s greatest curlers.

Everything Martin brought to the sport will follow the Edmonton legend when he comes to the Esquimalt Curling Club Oct. 13-14 to provide on-ice instructional clinics for curlers of all levels.

With his fit, well-toned physical appearance, he is a curler who looked like he hit the gym as hard as the ice, starting a trend now followed throughout the sport.

Martin is considered a revolutionary figure in the evolution of the financial aspects of the modern game, having played key roles in the development of the Grand Slam of Curling and World Curling Tour. It is estimated that his teams won nearly $2 million in career earnings.

Martin was inducted into the World Curling Hall of Fame this year during the world championships held at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.

There will be a maximum of 24 curlers allowed for each of the two-day sessions at the Esquimalt club.

If you want to hear heroic Olympian tales — Martin won gold at the home-nation 2010 Vancouver Olympics and silver at the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Games — you are also in luck.

There will be a dinner in Martin’s honour on the Saturday night in Esquimalt, with Martin as the guest speaker, to regale guests about his playing adventures at the Olympics and Brier. He might even toss in a story about winning the world championship in beautiful downtown Grand Forks in 2008 to buttress his Brier national championships in 1991, 1997, 2008 and 2009.

Pricing is $65 for each of the Saturday and Sunday on-ice sessions and $40 for the dinner reception. Registration can be done through Al Sutherland at sudsy[email protected].
