It was a tough start to the diving season for Victoria's Emily Schmidt.

The teenager failed to make the finals after finishing 19th in the preliminary round of the 14-15-year-old women's one-metre springboard at the FINA World Junior Diving Championships in Adelaide, Australia.

"I'm a little disappointed," Schmidt said in a Diving Canada statement.

"I didn't do my dives well, I didn't feel confident enough."

Samantha Maiorino of Pointe-Claire, Que., was the top Canadian, finishing ninth. Liu Huixia of China won the gold medal.

HAWKS SOAR PAST MIDGET ROYALS

The South Island Royals had trouble taming Hawks last weekend.

The visiting Valley West squad swept the B.C.

Major Midget Hockey League weekend doubleheader against the Royals, winning Saturday 6-5, and Sunday 5-2. The losses dropped South Island's early record to 1-4-1, while Valley West improved to 4-2. Nick Guiney and Haydn Hopkins had the Royals' goals on Sunday.

Next up for the Royals is a trip to the Mainland this weekend for a pair of games against the Greater Vancouver Canadians.

South Island's next home game is when the North Island Silvertips pay a visit to Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre on Oct. 20.

MOUNTAIN BIKE EVENT ON TAP

This weekend is the time to grab the mountain bike and head to the hills.

The South Island Mountain Bike Society's fifth annual Take a Kid Mountain Biking event goes Sunday at Mt. Work in Hartland Regional Park and Cleasby Bike Park in Cobble Hill. The event features friendly competition, guided rides for all ages, a barbecue, snacks and prizes. Local bike shops will also be sponsoring bike stops along the trails.
