Island golfer Cory Renfrew settles for second

Cory Renfrew couldn’t quite pull it off.

After firing a red-hot, rare round of 59 on Tuesday, the Victoria golfer finished with an even-par 71 on Thursday in the third and final round of the All-American Tour’s sixth event of the season at Legacy Golf Resort in Phoenix.

Renfrew finished tied for second as he sandwiched a 69 in the second round for a 199 total. His 14-under finish left him tied with Jake Younan-Wise, one shot behind winner Tyler Weworski.

“Well, today didn’t finish like I hoped. I hit lots of good shots and a few ugly ones but I grinded till the end. Learned things for next time,” Renfrew stated on his Twitter account.

Renfrew finished tied for seventh in last week’s event on the mini tour, which does produce four Web.com Tour exemptions during various stages of the season.

Canadian Richard Lee won the first exemption with the remaining three handed out to the leading points winners from events No. 4-6, 7-9 and 10-12. The seventh stop goes Dec. 18-20 at Troon North in Scottsdale, Arizona.
