Island girls crack B.C. U-18 rugby sevens team

Six Island girls have earned a trip to Las Vegas. The first B.C.

Six Island girls have earned a trip to Las Vegas.

The first B.C. under-18 rugby sevens team was announced this week and it had a heavy Cowichan flavour to it as it gears up to play in the inaugural 2013 Las Vegas Invitational High School Girls Sevens Tournament.

Among the 12 players who will represent B.C. are Ciel Arbour-Boehme, Brittany Reid, Adrienne Saari, Leah Theobold and Allie White of the Cowichan Rugby Club. Samantha Rumney of Cumberland and G.P. Vanier also made the squad, which will be co-coached by Cowichan boss Brad Skene.

The Las Vegas tournament is slated for Feb. 7-9 and while in Sin City the B.C. squad will have an opportunity to watch rugby at the senior level as the high school tournament is run in conjunction with the prestigious Las Vegas International Sevens event in which Canada’s senior women’s and men’s teams are entered.

Royals split first-half finale

The South Island Royals head into the Christmas break with mixed emotions.

In the Royals’ final weekend of play in 2012, South Island welcomed the Greater Vancouver Canadians for a B.C. Major Midget Hockey League double-header last weekend. While the Royals dominated the Saturday game and came away with a 5-1 victory, South Island’s offence dried up in the second game on Sunday, resulting in a 3-1 defeat.

The split moves the Royals’ record to 7-12-5, while the Canadians stand at 12-8-2.

The Royals are now off until Jan. 5-6 when they travel to face the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds.

Two Royals will have an extra busy January as defenceman Sean Buchanan and forward Cole Pickup were named Wednesday to the BCMMHL all-star game.

Buchanan and Pickup will suit up for Team Red against Team White in the annual event, slated for Jan. 18 at the Langley Events Centre.

Team White will have four North Island Silvertips in the lineup as goaltender Liam Giroux, defenceman Kyle MacDonald and forwards Nik Gomerich and Curtis McCarrick all got all-star nods.

Two Devils off to NCAA

It may be snowy and rainy outside, but that hasn’t kept Victoria Devils softball players silent.

Two Devils recently accepted scholarships to NCAA universities in the U.S.

Prestlee Cooper of Duncan, an outfielder, will be heading to Indiana University-Purdue in Fort Wayne next month and play softball for the Mastodons in the Summitt League.

Victoria’s Chelsea Strandlund, an infielder, will be off to the University of North Carolina-Greensboro next month. The Lambrick Park grad will suit up for the Spartans in the Southern Conference.
