Hosts have gold in sight at Vikes Shootout

The University of Victoria men shot a five-player total of 291, led by Josh Miller’s one-under-par 69. The UBC Thunderbirds were second at 302, followed by Ottawa University and Eugene, Oregon’s Corban University tied at 305, the University of Alberta Golden Bears and University of Manitoba Bison both at 311 and Corban-II at 318.

The top-three individual leaders were Miller of the Vikes at 69, Carter Lewis of Ottawa at 70 and Andrew Bruce of UVic at 71.

On the women’s side, Shania Remandaban cuised to a 1-over 73 to help the T-Birds take the overall lead. UBC led UVic by 15 strokes. The Vikes were led by Nicole Gargarella’s 77 and Quinn Fitzgerald’s 80.

The final round goes today at Cordova Bay.

• SOCCER: Three goals in a 15-minute span late in the second half led the UVic Vikes women’s soccer team to a 4-0 victory over the University of Saskatchewan Huskies on Sunday in Saskatoon.

Two of the goals came from Rachel Baird at 76 and 78 minutes before Eryn Libert-Scott closed out scoring at 90 minutes. Georgia Bignold opened scoring for the Vikes. Puck Louwes recorded the clean sheet with four saves.

Baird also scored twice, with Louwes beginning her shutout weekend in the Vikes’ 4-0 win Saturday in Regina against the Cougars.

UVic, fourth in the Pacific Division of Canada West at 6-5-1, hosts the Fraser Valley Cascades on Friday and Trinity Western Spartans on Saturday at Centennial Stadium.

Meanwhile, freshman standout Matteo Ventura out of Reynolds Secondary scored his ninth goal of the season to give the UVic Vikes men’s soccer team a 2-1 victory over the Fraser Valley Cascades (6-6-1) at Centennial Stadium.

Rees Goertzen scored his first of the season for UVic’s other goal.

UVic (4-7-3) began the weekend with a 2-1 home loss to Trinity Western. The Vikes conclude their regular season Friday and Saturday in the Interior against Thompson Rivers and UBC-Okanagan.

• FIELD HOCKEY: The Vikes were held to a 2-2 draw Sunday at the UVic turf field by the winless Calgary Dinos in Canada West women’s play.

Delaney Booker and Stefanie Langkammer scored for the Vikes.

It was the last home game for graduating fifth-year Vikes Kristina Walters-Shumka, Jenna Dhillon, Lindsay Cole, Booker and Langkammer.

The Vikes must await the results of this weekend’s UBC-Calgary games to see whether UVic or UBC gets the lone Canada West berth into the U Sports national championship tournament Nov. 1-4 at the home of the Ontario champion.

• ROWING: The University of Victoria Vikes men’s team finished runners-up to UBC for the second consecutive year at the Western Canadian university rowing championship over the weekend at Telford Lake in Leduc, Alta.

UVic highlights included fifth-year Luc Brodeur defending his title by taking gold in the single in 8:06.1. Ellis Hollands was the other gold medalist on the day for the Vikes as the third-year puller won gold in the lightweight single.

The Vikes finished in second with 151 points while UBC finished with 185.5 points and Calgary third with 84.5 points. The UVic Vikes women’s team also placed second in the Western Canadians at Leduc. UBC came away with the conference banner with 165 points while the Vikes finished with 123 and third-place Calgary 84 points.

• CROSS COUNTRY: The UVic Vikes men’s cross country team finished first overall in the 10K race at the Vikes Invitational over the weekend at Beacon Hill Park to best their rivals from UBC and Trinity Western. The first overall finish also gives the Vikes two points in the Legends Cup standings, the all-sport season rivalry series between Vikes and T-Birds teams. UBC has a commanding 13-3 points lead this season across all sports.

Alex Nemethy was the top Vikes harrier on the weekend with fifth place in a time of 32:39. He was followed by three Vikes teammates Derrick Evans, Joshua Kozelj, Jonathan Toombs and Ben Weir who finished sixth through to eighth. Having four runners finish in the top 10 gave the Vikes the times they needed to secure first place in the team standings.

• BASKETBALL: The UVic Vikes men’s team went 1-2 in the Carleton Invitational Tournament held over the weekend in Ottawa. Mason Loewen scored 15 points as the Vikes defeated the Concordia Stingers 70-67 while Loewen had 17 points and point-guard Scott Kellum 16 in an 87-76 loss to the Guelph Gryphons. The Vikes were also beaten 72-55 by the host Ravens.
