Friday: NHLer Ryan O'Byrne of Victoria presented a cheque Thursday to Patti Hunter, general manager of KidSport Greater Victoria.

NHLer Ryan O’Byrne of Victoria presented a cheque Thursday to Patti Hunter, general manager of KidSport Greater Victoria. O’Byrne’s charity kids hockey camp raised $40,156 for the organization, which provides registration fees and equipment funding for families who otherwise would not be able to afford to put their childrens in sports. The cheque presentation was made at Kirby’s Source for Sports. O’Byrne’s camp raised $25,000 last year for KidSport in its first year of operation. Several NHLers from the Island and others — including O'Byrne, Jamie Benn, Tyson Barrie, Matt Irwin, Manny Malhotra, Paul Bissonnette and Boyd Gordon — are taking part in O'Byrne's annual camp for kids, which began Monday and runs through today at the UVic Ian Stewart Complex. Fundraising raffle items this year included a signed Phil Kessel jersey and two prime tickets to the 2014 Canucks-Senators game to be played at B.C. Place.
