The University of Calgary Dinos flashed their credentials as defending U Sports national men’s basketball champions by sweeping the University of Victoria Vikes over the weekend.

The University of Calgary Dinos flashed their credentials as defending U Sports national men’s basketball champions by sweeping the University of Victoria Vikes over the weekend.

The Dinos haven’t missed a beat since winning the first men’s hoops national title in school history last season and are ranked No. 3 in the U Sports national top-10 poll.

Calgary defeated the Vikes 86-74 in Canada West action Sunday to follow up their 87-63 win on Saturday night.

The Dinos remained undefeated at 8-0 in Canada West, while UVic fell to 2-6.

Mason Loewen led the Vikes with 16 points Sunday while guard Scott Kellum scored 15 points and and Jordan Charles 13 while Taylor Montgomery-Stinson hit three three-pointers. Brett Layton of Calgary led all scorers with 21 points.

Meanwhile, the Dinos women cagers (5-3) also recorded the Canada West sweep over UVic (5-3) with an 86-65 victory Sunday to follow up the 91-61 win from the night before.

Ashlyn Day and Amira Giannattasio led UVic with 18 points each while Morgan Roskelley added nine. Aleah Ashlee pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds for UVic. Bobbi-Jo Colburn scored 22 points for Calgary.

The UVic teams return home to host their Trinity Western University Spartans counterparts this weekend at CARSA gym.
