Salmonbellies bounce Victoria Shamrocks in WLA action

Victoria outshot New Westminster by a 55-35 margin, but couldn't get past the standout goaltending of Neil Tyacke.

The New Westminster ­Salmonbellies, backed by the standout goaltending of game first-star Neil Tyacke, clipped the Victoria Shamrocks 11-7 in Western Lacrosse Association action Thursday night at Queen’s Park Arena.

Victoria (8-3) outshot New Westminster (6-8) by a 55-35 margin.

The Salmonbellies touched the Shamrocks early and led 7-3 after the first period. Victoria brought it to within 10-7 at the second break but was held scoreless in the final period.

Mitch Jones had a goal and four assists for the ­Salmonbellies and Jason Jones a goal and three assists while Ethan Forgrave and Anthony Malcolm scored hat-tricks.

Chris Wardle led Victoria with a hat-trick and two assists for a five-point night. Jake ­Foster, Larson Sundown, Ben McCullough and Nick Preston scored the other Shamrocks goals, while Marshal King added three assists.

The Shamrocks, who sit two points back of the league-leading Nanaimo Timberment but with three games in hand, now return home to play the Burnaby ­Lakers (3-8-1) on Sunday at 5 p.m. in The Q Centre.
