Unique retirement community in Victoria is redefining active senior living

Residents of Tapestry at Victoria Harbour are social, healthy, and connected in a lively community with others seeking to live in a vibrant and engaged environment
Tapestry offers residents endless opportunities to stay active and fit – from yoga, hiking, biking and boxing to one-on-one personal training offered by the community’s kinesiologist.

You’re someone who chooses to live life on your own terms, and that doesn’t have to stop as you get older.

By challenging commonly-held beliefs of how older adults should live out their later years and reaffirming the idea that experiences shouldn’t slow down with age, Tapestry at Victoria Harbour is changing the definition of active retirement living for independent seniors.

Opened in 2021, this unique retirement community in downtown Victoria is centrally located in the heart of the Inner Harbour. Just steps from the conveniences the city has to offer, Tapestry at Victoria Harbour creates fulfilling experiences for residents. At Tapestry, residents continue to enhance their health and wellness, extend their social connections, and enjoy their daily lives to the fullest – all within a vibrant community of individuals.

Health and wellness-inspired programming

Wellness is the key to living your best life, and Tapestry believes it is possible to be healthier as you age. As a testament to their commitment to holistic wellness, Tapestry at Victoria Harbour has been a multi-year recipient of the International Council on Active Aging’s NuStep Beacon “Best in Wellness” Award, which recognizes the Top 25 senior living communities in North America. Several residents have significantly improved their health and wellbeing after taking advantage of Tapestry’s various health and wellness programs, from group workout classes to personal fitness sessions led by the community’s kinesiologist.

After working one-on-one with in-house kinesiologist Fatima, Tapestry at Victoria Harbour resident Carmen was able to stop using walking aids. “Fatima started working with me on my strength and balance, and within four months I was walking on my own with no walker and no cane.”

A solid sense of community

Residents can also choose how involved they are in the social activities offered at Tapestry at Victoria Harbour; they have the option to actively pursue their range of hobbies and engage in new passions alongside fellow residents.

“We firmly resist ageistic notions of what is possible as you age and we don’t try to limit opportunities or experiences by how many birthdays one has celebrated,” says Amber Reis, general manager at Tapestry at Victoria Harbour. “Our residents have the opportunity to participate in options that appeal to them; from hybrid belly-dancing classes, kayaking and hiking, to participating in writing and book clubs, as well as a singing group.”

In addition to organizing a cruise to Alaska later this year, residents are actively involved in planning and participating in group ventures that benefit the greater community.

“Residents are exceptionally community-minded, flexing their wellness muscle by giving to others to enrich broader society,” shares Reis. “They’ve raised more than $20,000 in donations for the Inter-Cultural Association of Greater Victoria to support displaced Ukrainian nationals. Currently, they’re leading a major fundraising effort to support a new BC Cancer – Victoria Integrated Care and Research Pavilion.”

Full-service, choice and flexibility

At Tapestry at Victoria Harbour, residents can focus their time on what they love to do and let Tapestry take care of the rest. The team offers services that simplify daily life by offering weekly housekeeping, transportation, and a full-service concierge team.

“Our chefs both cook and serve guests, just like in fine restaurants,” says Reis. “This allows them to engage with residents on their preferences, share their knowledge and continue to evolve offerings based on evolving tastes.”

At Tapestry at Victoria Harbour, residents can continue to live rich, meaningful and purposeful lives as they age.

“Often, after moving in, people will share how they wish they made the decision much earlier given how much the experience has enriched their lives,” says Reis. “We encourage anyone considering making a change to visit Tapestry at Victoria Harbour and experience our difference for themselves.”
