Reasons to ride a bicycle

Happy Bike to Work Week! Whether you ride every day or are a fair-weather cyclist, a longtime pedaler or just testing the bike paths, BTWW is a good time to celebrate all the reasons to ride. Here are some of mine: 1. Built-in exercise.

Happy Bike to Work Week! Whether you ride every day or are a fair-weather cyclist, a longtime pedaler or just testing the bike paths, BTWW is a good time to celebrate all the reasons to ride. Here are some of mine:

1. Built-in exercise. My commute gives me 30 minutes of activity (almost) every day – and I don't even have to think about it.

2. Connection to what's going on around me. I notice changes in the seasons and neighbourhoods that I wouldn't otherwise, and it's easy to stop and check things out.

3. Time to unwind. After a long or stressful day at work, the ride home gives me a bit of mental space to decompress.

4. The happy factor. It's fun! To me, there's nothing better than riding under a blue sky, listening to the wind in the leaves and the birds.

5. It's cheaper than driving (and parking is easier to find)

6. My transportation is leg powered. It's no longer my top reason for riding, but the environmental factor is still important to me.

Victoria's Bike to Work Week festivities – now in their 20th year – continue through Saturday with a Mega Celebration Station at Centennial Square from 1 to 4 p.m.
