Did you know that Victoria’s most loved humour columnist Jack Knox (and former Tour de Rock rider) also moonlights as a bass player? And did you further know that Trek Bikes in Vic West (and long-time Tour de Rock sponsor) sometimes transforms into a concert venue?

I think you know where I’m going with this.

One night only — Aug. 22 — you can experience the majesty of the band Big Font, made up of former Tour de Rock riders Ed Bain, Andy Dunstan, Bill Fry, Jack Knox and Alex Yelovatz.
For $20 you get a beer, a burger and the harmonious magic of this band of misfits, er, I mean, the local band most often mistaken for Bon Jovi. All proceeds support Tour de Rock and the Canadian Cancer Society.

Fry, the lead singer, promised that the band might play one song from this century...if they can learn it in time.

“Everyone can be rest assured we won’t be trying any new material on them,” Fry said. “And the only Katy Perry we’ll be doing is if Katy Perry covered a Rolling Stones song.”

Fry gave me some background on the band’s ascent from underground garage band loved ironically by #yyj hipsters to international cover band sensation.

“We used to be called Old Play,” explained Fry. One day, hoping to spice things up, Fry brought in sheet music for some new songs. “Nobody could read the sheet music because the font was too small. And I said, ‘Oh my God,’ I’ve got to bring in bigger font.’”

And thus Big Font was born.

That was right before their global debut which brought the band to the U.K.

“That means that Andy Dunstan went to England and sang for his family,” Fry said.

So hurry up and get your tickets for the band’s final Victoria tour date this year. Things kick off at 7:30 p.m.

“It won’t be too late of a night because the band members have to get home to watch Matlock,” Fry said.

You can pick up tickets in advance from the Trek Bikes store at 338 Catherine Street or contact me at [email protected] to pick them up at the Times Colonist building. Let's rock all night long! Or at least until everyone has to go to bed.
