User-pay model not the way to go

Re: "Driver should pay cost of the roads," Sept. 27.

The argument that drivers don't pay the full cost of roads shouldn't carry much weight. Those who say that motorists are heavily subsidized should ask themselves: "By whom?" The answer is the taxpayer, most of whom are, well, drivers.

Should regular bus users pay the full cost of transit? What about pedestrians? Should they pay the full cost of sidewalks, crosswalks and those fancy traffic-calming measures? Why should cyclists get a free ride?

We don't have a strict user-pay model for transportation. It's taxpayer-funded infrastructure with just enough of a userpay element to upset us all. Full user-pay would only impose more cost on those who are least able to pay.
