Thumbs Up/ Thumbs Down

Thumbs Up - To Esquimalt Coun. Dave Hodgins for his battle in favour of the public's right to know.

Thumbs Up - To Esquimalt Coun. Dave Hodgins for his battle in favour of the public's right to know. He has fought since November to have the Esquimalt council release information pertaining to the municipality's effort to contract with the RCMP for policing.

Thumbs Up - To Tanya Huether of Lacombe, Alta., who tracked down the thieves who stole her computer and other items during a burglary at a Saanich Road residence on Aug. 13. With the help of GPS-based technology and her savvy brother, she tracked the stolen items to an Esquimalt apartment, where police found a trove of stolen property, including Huether's possessions.

Thumbs Down - To Prince Harry, for cavorting about unclothed in Las Vegas, and to those who took photos and those who disseminated the pictures. Could we have not been spared this undignified and tasteless episode that does not speak well for the Royal Family?

Thumbs Up - To University of Victoria graduate student and researcher Alison Proctor and her UVic team, for their plans to head to the Arctic in search of the lost ships of explorer Sir John Franklin as part of a Parks Canada archeology project.
