Take Washington ferries to the Mainland

Re: "B.C. Ferries gets OK for 4.1% fare hike in 2013," Oct. 2. Ferry fare increases got you up in arms? There is an alternative. The Washington state ferry runs from Sidney to Anacortes. Two people and a vehicle travel round-trip for $131.

The MV Chelan pulls into the dock at Sidney on its run from Anacortes, Washington. A letter-writer suggests Island residents could save almost $50 on a round trip to the Mainland by using U.S. ferries instead of those from B.C.

Ferry fare increases got you up in arms? There is an alternative.

The Washington state ferry runs from Sidney to Anacortes. Two people and a vehicle travel round-trip for $131.80, compared to $157.90 on a B.C. ferry. It's even less if you have a Smart car, only $112.70. Add the lower tax rate in Washington, and lower gas prices and you can guess how I'm going to be getting to the Mainland.
