Re: “CRD selected best possible sewage-treatment plan,” April 16.

As one homeowner who will be paying lots of bucks for a sewage system, I want value for my money. I’m not content to accept and pay for sewage treatment that doesn’t keep 99 per cent of the toxins out of the ocean. I want the best, most technologically advanced system we can get, because we might very well be pressured or legislated in the future to update a system to comply with environmental concerns.

I think a lot of people have accepted that we have to pay for sewage treatment. In spite of the scientific and health experts, a secondary treatment system is mandated by provincial and federal governments.

I find that people are not happy with how the Capital Regional District has proceeded to date, and having felt powerless, just didn’t become involved. Now, with Esquimalt council’s decision stopping the CRD in its tracks, this presents a game-changer.

The provincial government is not willing to step in and force Esquimalt to comply. Here is the opportunity citizens have: Sign a petition to have the CRD engage the services of an independent consultant to analyze both the CRD plan, and the RITE plan to determine costs and feasibility.

Only then will I and other homeowners know the truth about value for our tax dollars regarding this stinky mess.
