I agree wholeheartedly with the guest editorial calling for the provincial government to help fund the work of the SPCA.
As the editorial states, the government mandates the SPCA to investigate allegations of animal abuse and neglect, and empowers it to seize suffering animals. By granting this authority to the SPCA, the government is expressing, on behalf of all British Columbians, the belief that animals have rights and that protecting them against cruelty, abuse and neglect is something we value as a society.
It follows, then, that we should be willing to help support its vital work, rather than leave it entirely dependent on the private donations.
