Re: “45,900 jobs lost across Canada,” Jan. 11.
The jobs numbers show that B.C. has lost a tremendous number of full-time jobs in December. The industry minister has said that the NDP would stop development and create a negative impact on full-time jobs. This is an ironic statement for those of us living in Shawnigan Lake, where the B.C. Liberal government has approved of a “development” that indeed jeopardizes a great number of jobs.
Should the proposed South Island Aggregates contaminated-soil site in Shawnigan Lake be approved, it would negatively affect businesses in and around the community. Consider, for example, the two international schools that provide stable, full-time employment to many dozens of local residents. It is certain that a contaminated-soil site in the watershed will negatively impact both of these schools, and in the long term could result in significant job losses in the community.
